What Is Jet Fan Thrust? How Is It Different from Airflow?

For jet fans, airflow is not the only important performance value. Thrust describes the force generated by the fan jet and how effectively it can induce movement in the surrounding air mass.

01

What is thrust?

Thrust is the pushing force created by the high-velocity air leaving a jet fan and is commonly expressed in Newtons. This force helps entrain and move a larger surrounding air mass.

02

Is airflow the same as thrust?

No. Airflow describes the volume of air moved per unit time, while thrust describes force. They are related, but they are not interchangeable performance parameters in a jet fan design.

03

Why does thrust matter in car parks?

Jet fans are used to direct polluted air or smoke toward a target direction. Required thrust depends on car park geometry, columns, beams, fan spacing and the intended airflow pattern.

04

Why can it be critical in tunnels?

In longitudinal tunnel ventilation, the combined thrust capacity of jet fans contributes to establishing airflow along the tunnel. Cross-section, traffic effects, aerodynamic resistance and design scenarios are considered together.

05

How should a jet fan be selected?

Fan diameter, motor power, thrust, outlet velocity, sound level, mounting arrangement and fire performance should all be evaluated against the project requirements.
